Spring Awakening
Sheik also is nearing the completion of a four-year project to adapt Frank Wedekind's "Spring Awakening" for New York's Roundabout Theatre. The production, Sheik says, is "essentially about the sexual awakening of adolescence in an oppressive German society of the late 19th century." Sater wrote the script; Sheik wrote the lyrics. The play retains the setting of Wedekind's original, but actors "dressed in period costume will grab a mike and sing rock songs," Sheik says. The message is that "these themes are universal."
