him/ant/poth(er)os

"There are three portions or persons of Eros that have been classically differentiated: himeros or physical desire for the immediately present to be grasped in the heat of the moment; anteros or answering love; and pothos, the longing toward the unattainable, the ungraspable, the incomprehensible, that idealization which is attendant upon all love and which is always beyond capture. Lotus

Image
Set in India against the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi's rise to power, Lotus follows the life of a young girl Chulia, a child-bride, who is abandoned at a widow's ashram. There she is forced to live out a life of penitence until death. Unwilling to accept her fate, Chulia becomes a catalyst for change in the lives of the widows. When her friend and confident, the beautiful Chendra falls in love with a young, upper class Gandhian idealist, the forbidden love boldly defies Hindu tradition and threatens to undermine the delicate balance of power within the social caste system of India. Lotus offers an examination of the lives of widows and Indian culture in colonial India but is ultimately a lyrical story of love, faith and redemption. The flower Lotus is symbolic of spiritual attainment and the flowering of human potential. We invite you to this poetic drama full of the colour, music and dance of traditional India. The sun and the moon will take you on a complex journey into the t...

aura & art

"By dividing the interpretation of an art work into several distinct "levels" it becomes possible to recognize a fundamental distinction between digital and non-digital art works, as well as realize the underlying ideology is based upon the illusion of infinite resources; as such it replicates the underlying ideology of capitalism itself -- that there is an infinite amount of wealth that can be extracted from a finite resource. It is an illusion that emerges in fantasies that digital technology ends scarcity by aspiring to the condition of information. The digital presents the illusion of a self-productive domain, infinite, capable of creating value without expenditure, unlike the reality of limited resources, time, expense, etc. that otherwise govern all forms of value and production." Murakami

"Along time ago in China there were cities with high walls surrounding them, with huge, magnificent gates. The gates weren't just doors for letting people in or out but had greater significance. People believed the city's soul resided in the gates. Or at least that it should reside there. It's like in Europe in the Middle Ages when people felt a city's heart lay in its cathedral and central square. Which is why even today in China there a lots of wonderful gates still standing. Do you know how the Chinese built these gates?" "I have no idea," Sumire answered. "People would take carts out to old battlefields and gather the bleached bones that were buried there or that lay scattered about. China's a pretty ancient country - lots of old battle grounds - so they never had to search far. At the entrance to the city they'd construct a huge gate and seal the bones inside. They hoped that by commemorating them this way the dead soldiers would c...

dada/tradition

Image
"... [power] lies in the fact that [repetitive musics] cause the forgetting of what is being repeated and they make for a nonforgetting of time as a beat in place. Tradition is that which concerns time, not content. Whereas what the West wants from autonomy, invention, novelty, self-determination is the opposite - to forget time and to preserve, acquire and accumulate contents. To turn them into what we call history, and to think that it progresses because it accumulates. On the contrary, in the case of popular traditions ... nothing is accumulated, that is, the narratives must be repeated all the time because they are forgotten all the time. But what does not get forgotten is the temporal beat that does not stop sending the narratives to oblivion. " ( Just Gaming . logos&mythos

The new mythos cannot emerge from the art of today's popular culture, in which the hero saves the day. Art as entertainment only drives us deeper into denial. Art as a cathartic experience is different. "The Greek tragic plays, based on the sacred stories of the gods, provide examples of such catharsis, or "purification." The art we need is an art that can confront us with the tragic results of our actions and embolden us to accept our culpability, while at the same time offering hope that we might salvage what is left of the Earth and our humanity. Is it possible to create new sacred stories, built on the familiar, that will restore both reverence and hope?" bare life

"What is bare life? This second question underscores the sheer vulnerability and complete exposure of being. Bare life deals with that part of our existence from which no measure of security will ever protect us. But as in sexuality, absolute exposure is intricately connected with infinite pleasure. There is an apocalyptic and obviously political dimension to bare life (brought out by torture and the concentration camp). There is, however, also a lyrical or even ecstatic dimension to it - a freedom for new and unexpected possibilities (in human relations as well as in our relationship to nature or, more generally, the world in which we live). liquid narrative

"The reason for my interest is simple: As a graduate student in the 1990s I studied ancient Greek epic and wrote my dissertation on Homer's Odysseys . Rather, it was the idea that the poet sculpted the story in different ways for each telling and each audience. Don Giovanni SSP Review

Opera company delivers impressive performance Shannon Boklaschuk, The StarPhoenix Published: Monday, July 17, 2006 Drama, romance, comedy -- Don Giovanni has got it all. On Saturday night, Mozart's renowned opera was brilliantly brought to life by Saskatoon Opera, with each vocalist delivering a most impressive performance. The show, which clocked in at around three hours, drew heart-felt applause and a standing ovation from the crowd -- and the praise was certainly well-deserved. The production offered first-rate entertainment, and the opera company should be proud of the high standard it has achieved. It's wonderful Saskatonians can enjoy such high-quality musicianship in their own backyard, and artistic director Barbara Montalbetti deserves kudos for her work. If you're not familiar with Don Giovanni, Mozart's opera is fast-paced and dramatic. It kicks off with a scene in which Don Giovanni (played by Matthew Leigh) attacks Donna Anna (Ileana Montalbetti), who manag...

"My advice would go something like this: forget everything school has taught you about what it means to learn. From now on you will grow and learn and acquire new skills and knowledge from the most unlikely places. Don't look at the people at the front of the room for the answers, look at the four people sitting around you and engage them in a deep conversation. The answer lies there. Or if not the answer, the next question, and it is finding the next question that is going to keep you going for the next 70 years." "And never forget those four people. You will see them again. This is because contrary to what school tells you about questions and answers, the truth is that the world is an oracle waiting to be consulted. inDance

Image
"An intimate, evening-length performance of the hereditary compositions of the female court dancers and male dance-masters of South India. play draws inspiration from the salon performances that were given by devadasis in South India until the early part of the twentieth century, and therefore relies heavily on the subtle and nuanced use of the face, hands and Karnatak music. inDANCE's representations of devadasi repertoire are thus stylized abstractions that call attention to the language of desire, love and jouissance once spoken by devadasi women, and today silenced by their disappearance. Rothko

"Here we are in the presence not of religion, but of something at once primordial and all too contemporary. On a notecard from the 1950s, Rothko had written, in his usual clotted style that yet makes his meaning entirely clear:" "'When I say that my paintings are Western, what I mean is that they seek the concretization of no state that is without the limits of western reason, no esoteric, extra-sensory or divine attributes to be achieved by prayer & terror. Those who can claim that these [limits] are exceeded are exhibiting self-imposed limitations as to the tensile limits of the imagination within those limits. In other words, that there is no yearning in these paintings for Paradise, or divination. On the contrary they are deeply involved in the possibility of ordinary humanity.'" artsFunding

University of Alberta sends artsy students some cash ALEXANDRA GILL From Monday's Globe and Mail Vancouver - After years of watching the arts lag behind engineering, medicine and science, the University of Alberta has established its own $1.5 - million annual fund to support students, faculty and researchers in the humanities, social sciences and fine arts. The Killam Research Fund was set up with $500,000 from the university and $1 - million from the Killam Trusts, which give out scholarships and research grants across Canada. University president Indira Samarasekera said it would help address "repeated and systematic" underfunding of the arts by the provincial government. The Alberta government has set up a $300-million endowment fund for health researchers and is building a $1-billion fund for science and engineering. There is no such provincial fund for social sciences and humanities, which represent the majority of students and faculty in Canada. (via globeandmail....

"What I am suggesting, then, is for networks to intervene into the market of higher education. The university is quite a vulnerable institution actually.
